This trainee-specific ACP-UK webinar will focus on the process of carrying out your research whilst on the doctorate, as Nicole recently completed her training. The research findings from Nicole’s empirical paper – Disclosing Racial Trauma in Psychological Therapy: Exploring the Experiences of Racially Minoritised People in the UK – will also be shared. In clinical psychology and the wider psychological professions, racialised disparities are long- standing and well-documented. Given the pervasiveness of racism throughout our society, and its traumatic impact, psychological professionals must be equipped to respond sensitively to racial trauma to avoid perpetuating further racial harm. Nicole’s thesis offers and example of doctoral-level research by generating new knowledge about whether and how racially minoritized clients feel these issues are addressed within the UK therapy context, in order that their lived experiences might inform clinical training and practice. As Nicole belongs to the community she researched, there will be explorations and reflection on the process of carrying out research within your own communities. There will also be an opportunity to ask Nicole questions.

Please note places are limited. The event will not be recorded to allow space for reflection and questions…

Tickets are only open to trainees; free to ACP-UK trainee members; £30 to non-members

Dr Nicole Samuel (she/her)
Nicole currently works as a clinical psychologist in the Lambeth Emotional Wellbeing Service – a team within the youth homelessness charity Centrepoint – which offers psychological support and advocacy to young people aged 16-25 who are insecurely housed and/or at risk of homelessness. Her role also involves delivering training and reflective practice to housing staff to promote more psychologically informed ways of working. Nicole is passionate about supporting marginalised populations, addressing racialised inequities in psychology, and using psychology and research as tools for social justice. These values are embedded in her doctoral research papers, which focused on exploring experiences of disclosing racial trauma in therapy, and cultivating cultural humility within clinical psychology training.
