A webinar hosted by the ACP-UK Clinical Health Psychology and Neuropsychology Network

Clinical psychologists are now required by the HCPC to meet newly launched Public Health Standards. This webinar will help you understand the key principles and approaches of public health, and consider how to apply them in your role.

This webinar will cover

the wider determinants of health and the relevance of these for your role

how to address health inequalities as part of your day-to-day role

how you could play a part in prevention

how to draw on your existing skillset as part of taking a population health management approach

Speakers:

Dr Jo Hall

Jo is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who has two roles, one as an embedded psychologist within a local Public Health Department and another role as a psychologist within a community NHS Trust on the prevention and health inequalities agenda – both within the Trust and across the local Integrated Care System. Jo is passionate about Public Health Clinical Psychology, and sees great potential for Clinical Psychologists and the profession’s skill set at the population health level, supporting prevention, considering the wider determinants of mental health, or addressing health inequalities – within existing roles, and within new roles where clinical psychologists may not be part of the traditional workforce.

Jo has worked in Public Health for almost 6 years, and is keen to share their experience and learning over this time around applying clinical psychology skills differently, developing public health psychology business cases, demonstrating impact differently, growing psychological staffing in public health approaches, and enthusing psychology trainees/workforce in this approach to psychology in all areas of practice.

Dr Vyv Huddy

Vyv Huddy is an Academic Director of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology programme in Sheffield; he is a clinical psychologist with experience of working in secondary care mental health services – across criminal justice settings, inpatient mental health units and community service contexts. His research post qualification initially focused on evaluating psychological therapies for psychosis and, later, their implementation in criminal justice settings. This work highlighted the difficulty of implementing therapies as per protocol and the impact of social and economic factors on access and outcomes. He has gradually fostered an interest in understanding the social determinants of mental health and have worked with doctoral students in this area, finding associations between inequality and mental health across domains.

Dr Liza Monaghan

Liza worked for over 30 years as a clinical psychologist in the NHS, primarily in adult mental health services, Alongside this, she has worked on the Sheffield Clinical Psychology training programme as a tutor, teacher, manager and Director of Clinical Practice for almost as long, and have developed a number of courses in (and carried out research on) supervision. Her current role on the programme encompasses equity, diversity and inclusion and developing leadership skills in trainees. I also work for the homelessness charity, Crisis, one day a week where she supports staff to work in a psychologically informed way.

Liza has a particular interest in using psychological ideas, including principles of community psychology, when working with services and organisations. She is trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy (and to a lesser extent in CFT), and believes that we can use our understanding of people in ways which can support services and help prevent some of the problems often encountered by psychologists on an individual level. Sheffield has had trainees on placement in two public health services and in a number of voluntary, charitable and third sector organisations. Liza is keen to continue with these as trainees have been able to make valuable contributions and learn skills which are useful to them in other settings.

Hari Parekh

Hari Parekh, former Director for Trainees for ACP-UK and a clinical psychologist (Pre-Registration) at Alder Hey Fresh CAMHS in Liverpool, brings a trainee’s perspective to the webinar. Following his specialist placement in Public Health in Trafford, Hari continues to focus on the intricate relationship between public policy, health disparities, and emotional well-being within the individual, communities, and wider society. Mindful of the broader societal, economic, and political dynamics impacting children, young people, and families in Liverpool, integrated with strategic thinking, Hari ensures his approach within CAMHS remains ethical, integrative, and socially conscious.

Matthew Vaughan

Matthew is the national trainee representative for England and a trainee clinical psychologist at the University of Liverpool. He grew up in a small town outside Stoke-On-Trent before completing an undergraduate degree in History and Psychology at the University of Liverpool and a Master’s degree in Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Manchester. He developed a keen interest in the wider/social determinants of health, social inequities, and how psychology as a profession navigates these factors which are so influential in the lives all of us, especially for those we work with. This perspective has made him keen to contribute to organisations such as ACP-UK as a way to contribute to broader change to improve the profession and those it serves. At the intersection of these interests lies his doctoral thesis which explores how mental health professionals ask about and act on social determinants of mental health.
