Webinar Details

This webinar focuses on how we as clinical psychologists can respond to the climate and ecological crises, and how we can help others to respond.

Our presenters will be clinical psychologists and climate activists Annie Mitchell and Tony Wainwright, and academic and psychotherapist Paul Hoggett. Annie, Paul and Tony will deliver material on the science related to climate breakdown, how we can engage with such a difficult subject, the barriers to engagement, the psychology of disavowal, what we know about climate change and mental health and how psychologists can contribute. As with other ACP-UK webinars we will aim to create as much space for interaction and dialogue as possible.

Paul helped pioneer the development of Psycho-Social studies at British universities and is a co-founder of the Climate Psychology Alliance, and has published and spoken extensively on issues relating to psychological responses to the climate crisis. Paul’s book ‘Climate Psychology: On Indifference to Disaster’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) is highly recommended. Annie and Tony have edited various special editions on the climate crisis. Annie’s career included time as a developmental, clinical health and community psychologist, and as clinical director of training in the south west of England (Exeter and Plymouth). She now works and teaches independently, and is active with XRPsychologists. She is a grandmother, and a playback theatre actor in a women’s theatre company: Tarte Noire. She has been presenting at workshops and writing about climate and psychology for over a decade, asking what (if anything) can the discipline(s) of psychology contribute to help bring about the changes we need for climate and ecological justice. Tony has worked for many years on the Exeter training programme and is chair of the BPS steering group on the climate and ecological crises. He and Annie have co-edited two special issues of Clinical Psychology Forum on issues relating to the climate crisis.
